Garden fence: which material is best?

4 min read
private plots

A seemingly simple matter – after all, everyone fences the area of their property. On the other hand, when looking at this, at least theoretically, banal question, one thing becomes clear. It is very important what type of fence we choose. And since we have a whole range of options from which we can ultimately choose the variant that is right for us, there is a high probability that choosing the right fence will be a fairly simple matter.

Purpose of the fence

This is by far the most important point. Not all fences are alike – and indeed, that is the truth. Different fences are used to separate and secure a vegetable garden, different fences can be used to separate a terrace and a recreation area. Garden plots are also fenced differently than private plots that are built on with a single-family house.

How the most important question we have to ask is that of the material. Which material is suitable for which application and what are the individual advantages and disadvantages?

Fences made of wood and stone

Wooden fences

These are still very popular and are gladly used. Therefore we can choose from a very wide range of options. Also, we can easily gain access to such a solution, which will be the perfect choice for us for years to come. As for wood – an important issue. If we rely on such a variant of fencing, it is imperative that we carefully protect this raw material. It’s not just about protection against moisture.

In addition to a layer of solid, proven impregnate, you also need to think about the color. Regardless of the shape – whether it’s a mesh or a more “advanced” variant of the fence – protection is essential.

Not only weather protection is important for a wooden fence. It is important to use products against insects and fungi. What type of wood is most commonly used for fencing? As a rule, it is pine or spruce, i.e. types of wood that are relatively soft, which makes boarding the fence much easier. Harder (and also more durable) wood is used for fence posts – here it is often oak, beech or acacia.

Stone fences

Compared to wood, stone is characterized by a significantly higher durability. This has a direct effect on the price, because we pay more for the material of the stone fence alone. The advantage is that the stone fences do not require any additional costs for protection against the elements.

The hardness of the stones used is important for the durability of our fence. It is worth using local aggregates such as basalt, granite, quartzite or porphyry

Fences made of metal, cast iron and concrete

Metal fences

This is an inexpensive variant of the fencing that is the most common. In the simple variant, a chain link fence is stretched on posts in the form of metal tubes. However, it is also possible to order complete, prefabricated aluminium or steel fields that are attached to masonry or prefabricated posts. An interesting option is fence panels, which are usually made from steel wire.

In the case of metal fences, the garden gates are also made of metal. Such a garden gate fence is usually coordinated with one another (fence and garden gate) and ideally bought from a single source.

Here we have a cross-section of the possibilities – from simple, rather coarse and even clumsy fences to effective wrought iron fences, which are commissioned by specialists in old blacksmithing. Yes, the latter are by far the most impressive and impressive variant of the fencing, which we are talking about a high price, but the durability and the extremely attractive appearance still find a lot of followers. Fortunately, there is also something for the less well-off wallet when it comes to metal fences.

Cast iron fences

Cast iron fences, cast in special shapes, are one such alternative. Covered with other metals or paint, they are perfectly protected against corrosion. There is still the absolute base – metal nets. You may not have to pay attention to the aesthetics here, but the simple construction, the assembly and the relatively high durability make it a common solution under the metal fences.

Thanks to the wide range, not only will you be able to precisely determine which solution you prefer, but also choose, buy and use the one that best suits us.

Concrete fencing

Prefabricated concrete segments have become increasingly popular as a fencing solution for garden areas in recent years. Their aesthetic dimension can be argued because – let’s not kid ourselves – they don’t exactly look stunning. However, they have an undeniable and undeniable strength. In any weather – frost, snow, rain or storm – they get along well and do not shy away from the worst weather conditions. An ideal solution for anyone for whom pragmatism is more important than looks. However, concrete slabs are heavy, which can cause inconvenience when laying.
