Home Renovation Ideas for Building an Audio Recording Studio
I always wanted a recording studio of my own. Therefore, when I decided to renovate my home, this was also on my checklist. At first, I thought that building a studio at home would only require a microphone and a desk. However, when the journey of my home renovation started, I also realized that building a professional studio is more than just having expensive equipment; the room is the actual decisive factor in the quality of your recording.
Furthermore, I also learned that from walls and flooring to lighting and placement of the equipment, everything affects the sound quality. For a perfect renovation, I treated this project as an investment in long-term creativity and better audio quality.
So, if you are also a musician, a podcaster, a content creator and want a recording studio at your home, then this blog is for you.
11 Home Renovation Tips for Building the Perfect Recording Studio
Begin with choosing the right room
The first thing I was focused on was selecting a suitable room for a studio. First, I thought a room with natural lighting would be good, but after a few minutes of thinking, I realised that the most traffic noise from outside was present in that room.
Then I thought of a quiet room far from the entrance, and that was the right choice. The reason? It had no outside noise and made the soundproofing easier.
So if you are looking for a perfect room for an audio recording studio, consider:
- A quiet room away from traffic noise.
- Minimal shaded walls.
- No or fewer windows.
- Square footage that matches your needs.
- High ceilings.
Aim for soundproofing before decoration
For a recording studio, beautiful decor doesn’t really matter. Therefore, instead of investing money and time in buying paints and furniture, you must invest in proper soundproofing.
What I did was upgrade the doors with weather stripping to eliminate sound leaks and seal the small gaps around the windows. Thick insulation is really important as it reduces outside noise. Moreover, proper soundproofing can be expensive, but smaller improvements can also make a big difference.
Small renovation ideas include:
- Installing insulated drywall.
- Using acoustic doors.
- Adding double-glazed windows
- Sealing air gaps.
- Installing solid core doors.
These improvements create a much quieter environment, well suited for recording quality.
Do not confuse the soundproofing with acoustic treatment
First, I considered acoustic treatment and soundproofing the same. Later, I learned that they were different, and it was a surprise for me.
Soundproofing prevents outside sounds from entering, whereas acoustic treatment affects how the sound behaves in the room.
Therefore, after you renovate the room, you must install acoustic panels on reflection points, add bass traps in the corner, and place a diffuser behind the listening position.
It will immediately lead to improvement in the vocal clarity.
Invest in proper flooring
So the next thing you must consider is flooring, as it affects comfort as well as acoustics. My room originally had shiny ceramic tiles that reflected the sound and created echo.
However, during the renovation, I replaced those tiles with wood and added a thick area rug.
Some of the suitable flooring choices include: engineered hardwood, vinyl flooring, laminate flooring, carpet in selected areas, and cork flooring for added sound absorption.
Plan electrical outlets carefully
Next, I also didn’t give electrical outlets much of a thought, as I could easily rely on extension cords.
But then, I gave it a thought and planned where all the equipment would sit. It helped the electricians to install outlets where needed.
The setup included power for the audio interface, studio monitors, computer, microphones, lighting, and charging stations etc.
Improving lighting without creating noise
Lighting directly influences productivity; however, for my voice recording studio, I chose silent LED lighting.
Furthermore, I also added adjustable lighting so I could switch between brighter and warmer lighting.
Built smart storage into the renovation
With a recording studio in your home, you will also have to manage space for each piece of equipment. From microphones to headphones, audio cables, adapters, memory cards, external hard drives and instruments, everything will be scattered across the room.
Therefore, during renovation also included built-in cabinets, floating shelves, cable management channels, hidden storage compartments, and quiet drawers.
Consider ventilation
As recording studios are very insulated, it gets really hard to sit for long in warm weather,
Therefore, I also installed a quieter ventilation solution that kept fresh air circulation without causing background noise.
It is crucial for comfort as well as protection of equipment from overheating.
Choose colors that encourage creativity
Color affects the mood more than you think. For my studio room, I chose neutral shades with warm wooden accents. Colors such as soft gray, white, blue, and earthy tones look calm, professional, and great if you plan to record videos too.
Bring comfortable furniture
The recording sessions can extend from 1 hour to several hours; therefore, you must have an ergonomic chair so you can easily sit and do your tasks. Another well-suited choice would be a studio desk to keep monitors, keyboards, and all the accessories.
Plan the future of your studio now
One thing that is important while renovating the room to build a studio is leaving space for future improvements.
This is crucial because comfort is what will affect your entire audio recording journey. Therefore, plan the space according to where you will be after 5 years.
For me, it helped because it was easier for me to add more equipment in the room as I had planned for expansion.
All in all!
If you are planning to build an audio recording studio through home renovation, one piece of advice is to invest in the room before you invest in the gear and equipment. It really determines the overall quality of your work. From selecting the right room to improving acoustics, optimising lighting, ventilation, storage, and electrical layouts, every renovation tip will help you with a better recording experience.
With these tips, your home becomes the ideal place for your audio recording.
